31 August - 4 September: Like an Islander: Slightly salty and completely happy

Authentic tales from Visit Sweden’s initiative “Your Swedish Island”.

With 267,570 islands to choose from, where do you even start? We've made it easier by selecting three favourites in the Gothenburg archipelago, islands where Swedes themselves love to spend their holidays.

Big or small, island life has a way of slowing things down. Sweden has more islands than any other country in the world and recently, five of them were even given away through Visit Sweden’s initiative “Your Swedish Island”. Luckily, thanks to the freedom to roam, everyone is welcome to explore them all.

This press trip explores the islands of Hönö, Styrsö and Vrångö, where everyday routines tend to revolve more around weather forecasts and ferry schedules than clocks and calendars. Here, salty swims before breakfast and long fika breaks in the harbour will keep you happily distracted.

Stay at the new Kusthotellet, a calm retreat by the sea.

Discover a coastal hiking trail, connecting several islands and offering views of dramatic cliffs, historic lighthouses and long wooden jetties.

There will also be time for a proper evening “dopp”, the Swedish tradition of taking a refreshing dip before dinner, preferably from a sun-warmed rock.

Meet Karolina, who introduces visitors to the world of seaweed safaris and edible treasures hidden beneath the surface. Spend time with Hans, a Styrsö local whose guided tours often turn into stories about island life, fishing traditions and why nobody here seems particularly stressed about catching the last ferry home.
