31 August – 3 September: Your Swedish Island – redefined in the north

What does island life in Sweden feel like once the summer crowds have left?

This press trip to Umeå and Västerbotten explores the many meanings of “island” in northern Sweden. From remote Baltic islands and river-bound peninsulas to creative communities and places shaped by nature, food and culture, you’ll discover a different side of Sweden – one where water is never far away and where life moves at a pace set by the landscape.

Along the way, you'll meet the people redefining what island life can be: foragers, artists, ecologists and entrepreneurs, all deeply connected to the places they call home.

Join us for:

  • Umeå: Exploring a city where culture, creativity and equality have helped shape one of northern Sweden’s most dynamic destinations.
  • Holmön Island: Discovering one of Sweden’s sunniest islands, where fishing traditions, rising shorelines and everyday island life remain closely connected.
  • A taste of island life: Foraging with locals, cycling through the landscape and enjoying seasonal meals inspired by nature and place.
  • Stora Fjäderägg and Granö Beckasin: Experiencing two distinct island perspectives – from a remote Baltic outpost to a peninsula surrounded by the Ume River.
  • Arctic Highways and Talking Trees: Meeting artists and ecologists who offer new ways of understanding identity, belonging and our relationship with nature.
  • Northern Lights – the season begins: Looking to the night sky for the chance to witness one of nature’s most spectacular displays.

Discover your Swedish island – wherever it may be found.
