Cinnamon rolls and where to get the best ones

Cinnamon rolls are the best-loved pastry among the pastry-loving Swedes. Sweet and moreish, they are also an important feature of a “fika” – or Swedish coffee break.

Apparently, the average Swede eats cakes and pastry equivalent to 316 cinnamon buns per year! This cinnamon-spiced doughy delight is essentially a long string of pastry dough wrapped into a ball and stuck together with sticky-sweet cinnamon buttery syrup.In Sweden, fika is an essential part of the day. In fact, fika is so sacred to Swedes that it is even built into many employee contracts. And, while newcomers to Sweden are often skeptical about fika at first, many end up admitting that some of the best ideas are hatched on fika breaks.

Nothing says fika more than a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll or bun (or kanelbulle) was first created after the First World War but, as the ingredients (flour, sugar, egg, butter, sugar cinnamon and cardamom) were expensive and hard to find, it did not become popular until the 1950s. These days, it is the ultimate symbol of Swedish home cooking and, as any Swede will tell you, the smell of newly baked cinnamon rolls is best smell in the world.

The cinnamon bun is so popular that, in 1999, a collective of Swedish baking ingredient producers known as Sweden’s Home Baking Council, announced that October 4th would henceforth be Cinnamon Bun Day (Kanelbullens dag).

Meanwhile, MR Cake, a new venture from two of Sweden’s best-known bakers, is also attracting the attention of Stockholm’s fika addicts.

Named Sweden’s best new bakery in the 2017 edition of the White Guide Swedish restaurant directory, Borgmästargården in Falkenberg on Sweden’s southwest coast is well worth a visit. Seasonal baked goods and locally sourced ingredients are the name of the game at this café. Maybe this is why it is considered one of the best places in Sweden to enjoy an authentic fika.
