Wherever you go in Sweden during the festive season, chances are you’ll stumble upon a cosy Christmas market filled with handcrafted gifts, seasonal treats and twinkling lights. Swedish craft traditions are strong, and you can expect hand-knitted mittens, wooden toys, candles and delicate decorations. And don’t miss the classic Christmas combo: a warm cup of Swedish mulled wine (called 'glögg') and a spicy gingerbread ('pepparkaka') as you wander through the stalls.

Set in the historic surroundings of Gammelstad Church Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Luleå, this charming outdoor market offers a festive glimpse into Swedish Christmas traditions of the past. Jamtli Christmas market, Jämtland

The Christmas market at Jamtli in Östersund is a full festive experience. Set in a historical open-air museum, it offers horse-drawn sleigh rides, dog sledding and a chance to explore Swedish Christmas traditions from times gone by. With nearly 200 exhibitors selling crafts and delicacies, the market draws thousands of visitors each year. In one of the old farmhouses, you can even visit the Jamtli Santa and Mrs Claus.

Stenegård Christmas market, Hälsingland

Set in one of Järvsö’s historic Hälsingegårdar – traditional timber farmhouses unique to the region – the Christmas market at Stenegård offers an atmospheric mix of old and new. Wander between indoor and outdoor stalls filled with locally made crafts and delicacies from across the Hälsingland province.

Falun Mine Christmas market, Dalarna

The Christmas market at the Falun Mine marks the start of the festive season for many locals. Held in the historical surroundings of this UNESCO-listed site, the market features locally produced delicacies, traditional crafts, carol singing and a visit from the mine’s own Santa Claus. While you’re there, consider returning the week after for a truly unique experience: the underground Lucia celebration, held 11–13 December.

Mårbacka Christmas fair, Värmland

Step into the world of Nobel Prize-winning author Selma Lagerlöf at her childhood home, Mårbacka in Sunne. During one weekend, the grounds of this historic estate in Värmland are transformed into a Christmas market, where artisans offer goods handcrafted according to traditional Swedish methods. For those curious about the author’s life, guided tours of the manor house are also available (in Swedish) during the market weekend.

Skansen Christmas market, Stockholm

Skansen’s Christmas market has been a festive favourite since 1903. Set within the historic open-air museum on Royal Djurgården, the market features traditional food, crafts and handmade gifts – many produced on-site by local artisans. Beyond the stalls, visitors can join in dancing around the Christmas tree, listen to Lucia concerts and take part in hands-on activities. With animals, workshops and seasonal cheer, Skansen offers a full day of festive fun for all ages.

Open: Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 28 November until 21 December 2025.

Stortorget Christmas market, Stockholm Old Town

Few Christmas markets are as atmospheric as Stortorgets Julmarknad, set in the heart of Stockholm’s Old Town (Gamla Stan). First held in 1837, this is Sweden’s oldest Christmas market. The stalls fill the cobbled square of Stortorget with the scent of mulled wine and the sparkle of handcrafted goods – from ironworks and ceramics to Swedish Christmas sweets and seasonal delicacies.

Open: Every day from the end of November (2025 dates to be confirmed).

Taxinge Castle Christmas fair, Sörmland

A Christmas fair with a castle as a backdrop? At Taxinge Castle in Sörmland – a region known for its many castles – the setting is as magical as the market itself. More than 100 skilled artisans gather here to offer quality crafts, food and seasonal treats. Don’t miss the castle’s legendary cake buffet, said to be the largest in northern Europe, serving up around 65 different cakes, cookies and pies each day.

The castle and its grounds are decked out with lights, Christmas trees and candles, creating a magical setting for one of the region’s largest markets. Expect seasonal food and drink, handcrafted gifts, children’s activities and even Christmas concerts in the castle church. Want to extend the festive feeling? Stay overnight in a cosy cottage on the estate.

Medieval Christmas, Gotland

Held inside a 13th-century church ruin, Medieval Christmas in Visby offers a festive weekend rooted in history. The market opens with a torchlight procession through the cobbled streets of the old town, followed by concerts, fairy tales and warming fires scattered throughout the grounds. All this unfolds in the heart of Visby, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Travel 100 years back in time at the traditional Christmas market in Eksjö, set in one of Sweden’s best-preserved wooden towns. The cobbled streets and timber houses of the old town create a truly atmospheric backdrop. Stalls offer a wide range of goods, from handmade candles and silversmith items to marzipan and marmalade, and the market concludes with a festive fire show.

Kosta Christmas market, Småland

Located in the heart of the Kingdom of Crystal (Glasriket), Kosta is home to one of Sweden’s most renowned glassworks, Kosta Boda, and a popular Christmas market known for its festive glow. The area is beautifully lit with millions of lights, and visitors can explore decorated stalls, seasonal displays and Santa’s magical wish list machine. Glassware and locally made products reflect the craftsmanship for which the region is known.

Open: Every Friday to Sunday from 15 November to 23 December, and daily from 25 to 31 December 2025.

Huseby Bruk Christmas fair, Småland

Each November, the historic ironworks village of Huseby turns into the Nordic region’s largest Christmas fair. Around 130 stalls are spread across barns, courtyards and halls, offering handmade crafts and locally produced delicacies. Visitors can also peek inside the manor house, watch traditional candy canes being made and follow the marching Santa band through the grounds. As darkness settles, the estate is lit by thousands of Christmas lights and flickering torches.

Kalmar Castle Christmas fair, Småland

Each year, Kalmar Castle – named one of the world’s most beautiful castles by CNN – hosts a four-day Christmas fair within its medieval walls. In this grand and historic setting, visitors can browse stalls filled with crafts, design and festive food. The same weekend, Kalmar’s city centre joins in the celebration with traditional Christmas window displays and seasonal atmosphere.
